The Basics about Plug Gages and Bore Gages

What are Plug Gages?

A plug gauge is a gage that is used to check the size of a drilled hole. They can be used to check the hole for a GO or NOGO determination, to be sure that your drilled holes are meeting your design tolerances. Taperlock, Trilock, Reversible and Cylindrical Taper are all types of a plug gauge. Each type of plug gauge can be used for different kinds of drilled holes that might be created and each has its own features and purpose. A Go NOGO plug gage is a measuring tool that does not return a size in the conventional sense, but instead returns a state. The state is either acceptable (the part is within tolerance and may be used) or it is unacceptable (and must be rejected). Plug gages are well suited for use in the production area of the factory as they require little skill or interpretation to use effectively and have few, if any, moving parts to be damaged in the often hostile production environment.

What is a Bore Gage?

The difference between a plug gages and a bore gage is that a plug gage tells you if a drilled hole is accurate to a specific predetermined size and a bore gage measures the dimensions of the drilled hole. A bore gage can also measure variances in the diameter throughout the entire depth of the drilled hole. In some cases you
could use either a bore gage or a plug gages, but there are typically advantages to each type that should be considered before making a determination.

What does a Plug Gauge Do?

A plug gauge is designed to make sure your drilled holes are the correct size. This is essential in situations where parts have to be made to fit together so that the hole is the correct size to accept the part that must fit into it. Anytime you need to be certain that a drilled hole is a particular predetermined size according to specs, you should use one of the many available types of plug gages. Of course there are several types available and you will need to get the right type of plug gauge for the job you are doing.

What does a Bore Gage Do?

A bore gage is used to measure a bore's size and dimensions by transferring the internal proportions to a remote measuring tool. This device works much like a very precise type of internal caliper and they do require a bit of experience to use properly and get accurate readings with. The bore gage is removed after being inserted and adjusted and may then be measured by a micrometer. There are many instances when the only way to get an accurate measurement is through the use of bore gages. Using the right gages is an important part of quality assurance and there are some jobs that may require the use of both plug gages and bore gages.
