Succession planning for an editor

Succession planning is a must for any organization if it has to keep moving forward irrespective of the people in charge. It ensures that at all times the organization has a head and the necessary hierarchy that are the hallmarks of a successful business. Applying this strategy to a publication business or newspaper where normally the editor is the fountainhead of all activity is not only possible but essential.

Create capable editors within the organization by time succession planning. This will ensure that you as an editor do not have to do everything and have enough people working within the organization so that you can attend to the bigger issues. It also ensures that in case any key personnel leaves you do not have to firefight and have enough functioning resources within the organization to fill up the gap.

This sort of succession planning can create confidence within the organization and help all to understand that they have a future in the organization. This confidence allows them to be bolder in the initiatives that the
y take, which in turn benefits the business.

Ensure that financial and emotional rewards in the form of commendations are always forthcoming from you as an editor, and the people feel that they are as capable as you are of doing the job.

With a succession plan in place an editor or sub editor will be aware of the possibilities that are available for him within the business, and it will also be able to fill up the gaps in the succession plan with suitable candidates from within the organization and from outside if such are not available.

As the succession plan unfolds it will be clearer to the sub editors that they have to develop if they are to fill up the gaps in the organization, and any attempts by them to improve their knowledge or administrative skills must be encouraged by the editor.

A succession plan in place enables the editor to test out potential individuals by giving them more opportunities to be independent, while remaining in the background, and at hand should any problems occur. This support can be of vital importance to the individual and help him to develop himself to fit the role that he has in the succession plan.
